For those of you who have come in contact with me over IRC, you’re probably well aware of the whine that has been surrounding me over the past few weeks – PC whine! So firstly my motherboard gave in (or so I thought) so while I was a little upset, I was happy to finally upgrade with a new CPU (quadcore) and sofourth. The only things I didn’t buy were a gfx card and PSU.

I spend one entire afternoon excitedly putting my PC together and making sure everything was plugged in correctly. Then it worked and I was so happy… for 3 hours. The monitor started to crap out. Assuming that it couldn’t be the monitor I thought it was the gfx card. I sucked it up and tried another one but alas, it was the monitor. Now i’m using a blurry CRT which was kindly loaned to me from a colleague.

So at least my PC was working even if I couldn’t really read text on the screen. The next day however this loud buzzing noise started coming from my power supply. GREAT!!! Games and whatnot still worked but the buzzing was disturbing. I cleaned out the dust and it became more persistent. With the help of google, I found out that the noise is from a busted cap. Worried that my PSU was going to explode and ruin all my wonderful new hardware (except the brown CPU fan, EEEW BROWN), I finally shut down my PC for good.

If you don’t understand why I don’t just buy a new PSU, firstly understand that my salary doesn’t permit such extravagant spending. Ever. That’s why I can’t play Quake right now and i’m sad because we just won our first CA ESL game! But I don’t want my PC to explode:

Luckily PURRI has a brand new PSU in Sweden. So now I just have to make sure that somehow it makes it here before I move to Cologne… wish me luck!
