Social science research shows that 20% of Americans, between 18 and 34 years old, have used their smart phones during sex. From a survey of 2000 participants, almost 10% of the sample population admitted to looking at their phones in intimate moments, with the majority of culprits embarrassingly belonging to my cohort.
Since this research is reported by Fox news, I figured the sensationalist headline was fitting. However, on a curious note, I think the most pertinent stats have been excluded. For one, was this behaviour more common for a certain gender? What exactly were they using the smartphones for? Were they Facebooking or using the camera? Or looking at porn? Or something else?
Obviously, this behaviour raises questions about sex with Americans (sorry, Americans were the sample so I have to pick on you). Is it so boring that people are able to multi-task? Or is it so spicy that it has to be recorded? Or do couples follow along to porn like home workout dvds? Did this get normalized thanks to Paris Hilton? Or is there a condom campaign running, similar to the one in Sweden?
Please take this headline for the joke that it is. I think it’s very interesting to examine the smartphone as an extension of ones self, but I am disappointed in the reporting of this research. Maybe I’ll look up the paper. Or not.
Apropos; an American lawyer is suing Apple to install filters for porn on the iPhone, since he can’t control himself, hahahaha!
