Study Buddy

Just thought i’d put up some stuff that may or may not help IBCoM students with your studies. I make these notes because making notes is like DOUBLE remembering – reading AND writing! So, it’s only for myself. I just upload them because it just takes 1 minute and maybe some people might find it useful – you don’t need to say thanks! Also these probably shouldn’t be the only things that you study!

Will continually update as the course goes on over the next 3 years! ^_~

CM1010 – Cultural influences on communication:
Lecture Notes – Just my lecture notes.

CM1007 – Communication Technologies and their impacts
Lecture Notes – Just my lecture notes.

CM1008 – Media Systems:
Summary – summary of what was covered in the lecture (roughly 30 pages)

CM1009 – Communication as a Social Force:
Summary – summary of what was covered in the lecture (roughly 30 pages)

CM1013 – Key Concepts in the Social Sciences:
Summary – summary of what was covered in the lectures and chapters – main focus on lectures.
Glossary of terms – All the terms used in all the chapters covered.

CM1005 – Introduction to Statistical Analysis:
Guide to using SPSS – The tests of significance, when we use them and how to input (and interpret) the functions into SPSS.
The formula sheet!! :)

CM1012 – Media Processes and Influences:
Chapter exercises – These are all the answers (except 1 that I couldn’t find) to the questions in the back of the course manual.
Lecture notes – Detailed notes from all the lectures EXCEPT lecture 5 (which I missed). If anyone has notes from this lecture please share! :)

CM1001 – Introduction to Human Communication:
Summary from 2nd year student – Please note, this is NOT my summary and only links to the blog of another student. But it’s an awesome summary, covers most of what will be tested.
Supplementary summary – This contains the stuff that’s left out (that was mentioned in the “key terms” sheet) from the one from Yan1ck’s blog.

CM1002 – Introduction to Social Science Research:
Chapter and lecture summary – This is what was covered in the lectures, elaborated with information from the chapters. 25 pages. Also some exam tips at the end.
45 “Test Questions” – I think if you can do these, you are READY! They are based on what has been mentioned in the classes and lectures which is what I believe we will be examined on.

  • These are in .docx format, upgrade your Word if you can’t read them :)
  • It helps if you turn on the navigation bar in word too, so you can quickly navigate between the headings of the things you need to study.

    1. Good luck with that ;)
Just a tip, to open docx files with old Office version: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.asp…

    2. Thanks Raph!! Still nerding out I see ;)

    3. "⇒ If x = 0, then b0 = 0 and there is no slope."
OR I dont understand what you try to say OR its wrong!

If X=0, you do not have to look at the slope to get Y
      example:
      Y=3+0.5X
so if X=0 you end up with: Y=3+(0.5*0)
      0.5*0=0
      so Y=3+0=3
the other way around; b0 is the value you get when x=0 also known as the contstant or the situation before the independent variable starts its influence.

just like a baby at age 0 has some body length already at birth

    4. I just realized what it is with "no slope"
if the formula has no b1, there is no slope, and there is no X required in the formula.
this does not mean that X=0.

      the formula Y=b0
is just a horizontal line, at the height of b0

      so Y=3
means that it doesnt matter how much the independent variable changes, the value stays the same.

example: when independent variable is age, and the dependent is amount of noses.

you are born with one nose, and when you get older you do not gain any more, nor does the amount of noses decrease.
the formula for this is: Y=1
it doesnt matter which X(age) you have, you have one nose

    5. Yeah I just meant that it's a horizontal line :)

Hey can you please add another summary :) :) I'm waiting anxiously :P
