Last week I wasn’t online at all due to my internet being down for an entire week. I could have gone to an internet cafe so I could have at least done a little bit of work during the week but then disaster struck. I stood on a bumble bee (then had an allergic reaction to the bite) and haven’t really been able to walk anywhere since. My solution? Single player games. Then I thought… I wonder what Quake 4 and Unreal Tournament 2004 are like in single player?! Admittedly ever since buying these games I have never even looked at the single player mode.
So after sifting through the hundreds of emails I had waiting for me when the internet came back, i’ve finally been able to upload this video:
Hmm It’s still tough for me to decide which one i’d pick as the better game to play in single player… you decide!
NB: I’ve started to upload to revver because the videos are come out in better quality than youtube but I still have my videos on youtube if you have an account there and would like to subscribe! Click here for my youtube page.

I just stumbled into here today and I wanted to make a comment here. It kind of surprises me that you think that Quake 4 wouldn’t have much of a single player game. But if your first experience was with games like Unreal Tournament and or Quake 3 I can see why (or if you always just played multiplayer and skipped single player entirely in all games which is almost hard to believe).
Originally first person shooters where primarily single player and multi player came later. Quake 4 is actually a sequel to Quake 2 but with the multi player portion meant to be a sequel to Quake 3. That’s why the two modes are so different. Both Quake 2 and 4 have the same “universe” for their single player story.
Basically though it’s mostly the UT games and Quake 3 that where primarily just multi player.. even the single player games in those are fake multi player with bots. It’s not necessarily true to say that Quake 4 is just a multi player game although you can play it that way if you want.
I wouldn’t say the single player game is better in either UT2004 or Quake 4 because they are totally different types of games even though they are FPS. Quake 4 has a full single player mode which focuses on you playing as a certain character and going through a storyline (paper thin as the plot may be). UT2004 is as you have noted just training for actual multiplayer mode. They are both very different experiences.
Another game that runs on the same engine and has a full single player mode (with even more of a story than Quake 4) is Prey. Doom 3’s single player mode is also of the “story+monsters” variety.
BTW, Enemy Territory Quake Wars uses the enemies from Quake 4\2 but it is mainly a multi player game again like 3.
Sorry for the length =P

BTW, I meant to say that yes there are other FPS that are just multi player but that all started with UT\Quake 3. However.. there are still a lot of FPS nowadays that come with traditional (meaning not fake multiplayer botmatches) single player games and Quake 4 is one of them.

I think ut2004 is out of competition, i like this game so much because it’s very dynamical and you have so much freedom to move and shoot (multidodges, shock rifle combo’s and more). When i’m trying to play quake i feel like paralised

Tetsu I totally agree with you. Yeah i’ve never opened the single player modes in these games until now.. I just never really felt like they would have as much to offer me as other single player games that were well… made to be single player. I did play Doom3 single player however because the multiplayer just didn’t run on my PC at the time

Yeah and like I said that is what Quake 4’s single player is… it’s made to be single player. Quake 3 is actually an anomaly in the Quake series thus far (until Quake Wars comes out which will then be the second multiplayer only Quake game) because the rest are meant to be single player and pretty much have multiplayer tacked. Just like Doom before them. Although 4 has the benefit of having 3’s pedigree behind its multiplayer. In Quake 4 you are essentially getting sequels to two games in one (2 and 3).
Which reminds me… in the unreal series Unreal and Unreal 2:The Awakening are like the other Quake games besides Quake 3 where they also have single player games that are meant to be single player.
I actually have other friends who got the impression that FPS just equals Deathmatch or Botmatch because they got into it with UT.
Personally I actually prefer FPS with full single player games like Quake 4, Doom 3, Prey, etc. If I wanted to play deathmatch I’d play with other people. Although every once in a while I do play a bit of those botmatch ladder things.
But I happen to be an old school FPS fan going back to Wolf3D.
I also like to play COOP (playing through those single player games with other people kind of like the squad mates in Quake 4) and it’s unfortunate that most modern PC FPS games don’t include it besides mods that add it in.
Geez I can go on and on about these games… lol

Smoke the point is that games like Quake 4 are marketed as multiplayer games and not much attention has been paid to the single player aspect of it.
Jamie: I still have no idea when UT3 is coming! I’m excited though and i’m holding my thumbs that it’s gonna be as good as anticipated!
