PBS recently put out a documentary called Digital Nation, which was pretty much about how technology was changing schools, life etc. But there was one very disturbing part in the documentary where the Lower Merion School District’s Assistant Principal demonstrated how he was able to spy on what the students were doing on their laptops:

He laughs and claims he likes to mess with the students by taking their pictures.

“They don’t even know we’re watching”.

In the video, it seems like the software being demonstrated is only able to see remotely what the students themselves are seeing on their desktops. However allegations have been made that the software is actually able to turn on the webcam without the knowledge of the students.

The FBI has now opened a criminal investigation over this issue.

Firstly, WTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFFFFFFFF?! Is it even legal to be able to spy on peoples desktops remotely without their knowledge? It seems like these students had no idea that it was happening. Do these guys have no lives at all that they’re watching what some young kids are doing on the PC? Come on, thats what those net nannies are for.

I can totally imagine that this is also happening in the workplace. People are all up-in-arms about it because they’re afraid that the schools are spying on their children getting dressed and in the shower or whatever (watch this girl try to get attention by accusing her school of spying on her in the shower). If I was a student and I saw someone was taking my picture from the webcam, i’d cover it up with black tape right away.

But what about those in the workplace?

If the job had gone the legal route and let me know that everything could be watched and recorded, it would be a little better. But i’m still not a fan of all this digital spying. I don’t even like to look on other peoples computers, it’s often that you can stumble on private things without meaning to.

This digital age has made stalking a whole lot easier but the gross part is that it also seems to be accepted. It takes away from the fun of getting to know people too. Embrace the mystery!

What do you think? Is it OK to watch what other people are doing on their computers? Is it correct for the school to spy on their kids? Should they REALLY care what they’re doing if their school work is getting done? Leave a comment or tweet your thoughts to @HelloLiefje.

With Christmas coming up its always a pain in the ass for me to get gifts for those guys who seem to have everything and don’t care for small things. Well heres a couple of ideas for those who love little gadgets and are potentially into spying.

The ipod tie:

I guess this is one really for the guy who likes to get away with listening to music in meetings. Called the “commuter tie” its meant to be for guys who spend a lot of time getting to / from work. For $100 its within the “not too extravagant” xmas present range. I can’t wait until people start recording conversations from this perfectly placed little pouch.

Visit the Thomas Pink website to order the “commuter tie” (in more than just blue)!

USB Glasses:

Well this one is an interesting move from Calven Klein. They’ve created some James Bond like sunglasses with a hidden USB stick! It’s stashed neatly away from prying eyes in the “arm” of the glasses. They’ve got some of that Rayban Wayfarer feeling of those old 80s shades and what they would imagine technology would be like in the future… in the 80s. I would prefer to see these in regular glasses for the more serious spies, so they can actually wear them inside at night without looking like a douche (because we all know that at night is when most data-stealing occurs).

But it’s only got 4 gig of memory and comes with a $200 price tag.

Because he was a “geek” she couldn’t accept that she was wrong and that she didn’t understand. Instead slams him for saying that he doesn’t know how to talk to “normal human beings”. Class act!

I love that my last update which has about 100 updates needed ended up being just one paragraph.

I can’t really remember the date that we moved to Cologne (Köln, for all of you who think Cologne refers to men’s perfume), but out first friends to come and visit us in the Fatherland was Fox and Trito!!

After having spent almost 7 months in Giessen, I can understand why no one came to visit us then, so it was cool to finally have stuff to show people!! So the first night we were able to have some kind of nerd-crew get together, with me, fox, purri, trito, neok and carmac.

The second day we had off work, and spent the time doing touristy stuff, such as visitng the dom. That thing is really impressive and i’m glad that we actually went there. I think if they didn’t come we would never go!! You know how it is – you are never a tourist in your own city.

The Dom

Then on Saturday we took a short drive to Venlo, as Trito had never seen Holland oustide of Schiphol. I wouldn’t really call Venlo typical Holland I guess, but it was wonderful to see all the charming little streets and houses. I even picked myself up a pair of totally killer indoor slippers, with a cute little pink bear.

fox and PURRI in Venlo

Later that evening when we got back, we met up with CrashLady, another female Quake 3 player (formerly from BadGirlsClan) and smuv, one of g0d’s CA teammates in the ESL cup. We had a bbq in the park, which would have been epic aside from the fact that we got these shitty temp bbqs and they didnt light properly, so we had very little food =(

bbq in the park

I wanted to go to the steak house down the street but I guess that plan was forgotten as we went out afterwards. Somehow we managed to make our way home walking from the place in Köln with the clubs (friesenplatz or something) which was cool

Then on Sunday it was a chill day, where we ended up meeting up with 2gd later that evening. I guess fox and trito were so bored with us we always had to meet the other nerdz in köln. There are so many gamers here, im starting to think this city is more nerdy than Stockholm XD.

PS: Vote for trito!!
